Kumquat Cupcakery just add bacon

http://www.kumquatcupcakery.com
Kumquat Cupcakery was born on October 15, 2007, when a dream, a sweet tooth, and a love for pleasing aesthetics were combined. With education from the Culinary Institute of America, The French Culinary Institute, and a BFA from Parsons School of Design, owner Keavy Landreth has set out to change the look and taste of cupcakes in NYC. Taking inspiration from the many gourmet patisseries around Manhattan, Keavy creates cupcakes that are enjoyed like a truffle or bonbon. Each one is appreciated for its bite sized stature, bold flavors, and specialized look. Kumquat Cupcakes have quickly become one of NYC's most sought out desserts for parties and weddings, giving guests the ability to try each unique flavor, while wowing them with a presentation as beautiful as a bouquet.

Congress Should Resolve to Simplify the Tax Code government

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/07/AR2...
While President-elect Barack Obama and Congress debate what could be $300 billion in tax cuts, one can only hope they will also address the mind-numbing provisions that make up the tax code. If we're going to go into that abyss yet again, can't we get some real permanent fixes that will end our frustration once and for all?

Honey Laundering: A sticky trail of intrigue and crime the biz
Link #143251 submitted by Mac on Jan 8, 2009 06:05pm.   (+410XP)
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/local/394053_honey30.asp
A far cry from the innocent image of Winnie the Pooh with a paw stuck in the honey pot, the international honey trade has become increasingly rife with crime and intrigue.

In the U.S., where bee colonies are dying off and demand for imported honey is soaring, traders of the thick amber liquid are resorting to elaborate schemes to dodge tariffs and health safeguards in order to dump cheap honey on the market, a five-month Seattle P-I investigation has found.

The business is plagued by foreign hucksters and shady importers who rip off conscientious U.S. packers with honey diluted with sugar water or corn syrup -- or worse, tainted with pesticides or antibiotics.

The Ponzi Scheme in Every Hedge Fund the biz

http://www.time.com/time/business/article/0,8599,1869196,00.html
Bernard Madoff's $50 billion Ponzi scheme continues to rock the financial world. But most hedge funds actually engage in similar - albeit legal - practices in the short run.

In the past, these practices helped inflate their gains as well as hedge-fund managers' salaries and bonuses, but recently they helped bring about the failure of many major hedge funds.

Homemade Girl Scout Cookie recipes just add bacon
Link #143247 submitted by Mac on Jan 8, 2009 11:20am.   (+430XP)
http://bakingbites.com/2009/01/homemade-girl-scout-cookie-recipes
Girl Scout cookie season is just around the corner. As usual, I’m not really planning to buy any of the Girl Scouts’ offerings - although I am happy to support local troops in other ways - because I know that I can make cookies that are as good or better at home. Girl Scout cookies still contain partially hydrogenated oils, even if they have decreased the amount to come in under the FDA’s definition of “zero trans fats per serving” (no more than .5g per serving). Homemade cookies are made with real ingredients - butter, sugar, flour, chocolate - and really do have zero trans fats. They’re still indulgent treats, but treats you can feel good about eating!

You can find recipes for four of the Scouts’ best sellers here, including an easy to make version of Thin Mints that you don’t need a cookie cutter to shape:

PETA // Save the Sea Kittens crackpots, kooks & tinfoil
Link #143246 submitted by Mac on Jan 8, 2009 10:42am.   (+440XP)
http://www.peta.org/sea_kittens
People don't seem to like fish. They're slithery and slimy, and they have eyes on either side of their pointy little heads—which is weird, to say the least. Plus, the small ones nibble at your feet when you're swimming, and the big ones—well, the big ones will bite your face off if Jaws is anything to go by.

Of course, if you look at it another way, what all this really means is that fish need to fire their PR guy—stat. Whoever was in charge of creating a positive image for fish needs to go right back to working on the Britney Spears account and leave our scaly little friends alone. You've done enough damage, buddy. We've got it from here.

And we're going to start by retiring the old name for good. When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it's time for a serious image makeover. And who could possibly want to put a hook through a sea kitten?

Government isn't very good at computers.
They spend millions to produce mediocre websites, hide away really useful public information and generally get it wrong. Which is a shame.

Hippies revolt over wireless network voodoo crackpots, kooks & tinfoil
Link #143242 submitted by AB on Jan 8, 2009 02:49am.   (+470XP)
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/171/1050171/hippies-revolt...
HIPPIES LIVING in the tiny town of Glastonbury claim that a new wi-fi network is responsible for a spate of health problems.

Glastonbury, which used to be a mecca for Christian pilgrims looking for King Arthur, has now been largely taken over by New Age hippies who think that it is a place of great healing energies.

That was, until the town set up a £34,000 project wi-fi network on an experimental basis. Apparently wi-fi jiggers about with your chakras and breaks ley lines, which makes you sick.

Trent Reznor Torrents 400GB of HD concert footage it's the arts

Your gift...

The internet is full of surprises these days.
I was contacted by a mysterious, shadowy group of subversives who SOMEHOW managed to film a substantial amount (over 400 GB!) of raw, unedited HD footage from three separate complete shows of our Lights in the Sky tour. Security must have been lacking at these shows because the quality of the footage is excellent.

If any of you could find a LINK to that footage I'll bet some enterprising fans could assemble something pretty cool.

Oh yeah, you didn't hear this from me.

There is about 405gb of HD footage available. It was recorded with multiple consumer HDV cameras during three shows: Victoria 12.05.08, Portland 12.07.08, and Sacramento 12.12.08.

Rudy's Father Speaks - The Pat Lawlor Interview some dude/some chick
Link #143240 submitted by XIV on Jan 7, 2009 10:06pm.   (+210XP)
http://www.gamesetwatch.com/2009/01/gamesetinterview_pat_lawlor.php
Few people have defined the modern era of pinball like Pat Lawlor has. In the late 1980s, he emerged as a leading designer in the industry with innovative Williams titles like Earthshaker and Whirlwind. In 1990, Lawlor and Larry DeMar hit it big with FunHouse, a pinball game in which an animatronic head named Rudy taunted players and dominated the playfield. Lawlor and DeMar went on to create The Addams Family for Bally and watched as it became the best-selling pinball machine in history.

Lawlor’s design work continued throughout the 1990s, as he unveiled such pinball titles as No Good Gofers, Red and Ted’s Road Show, Safecracker, and a richly complex take on The Twilight Zone. After leaving Williams, Lawlor founded his own design firm, where he has since engineered Stern Pinball offerings based on Monopoly, NASCAR, Family Guy, and other familiar properties.

He also can be seen in Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball, a recent documentary that digs into the story behind Pinball 2000, Williams’ failed franchise that promised to revolution the genre by mixing pinball and video games. We recently tapped Lawlor for his opinions on past projects, the state of pinball, and what can make a regular silverball machine into a classic.
